- Helps explain irregular cycles, hot flashes, low libido and mood changes.
- Adds context to perimenopause and menopause symptoms, though levels swing widely in perimenopause.
- In men, flags estrogen that runs too high or too low for energy, libido and bone.
- Pairs with testosterone to show hormone balance through the T/E2 ratio.
- Gives a baseline before or during any hormone therapy.
What is estradiol?
Estradiol (E2) is made mainly by the ovaries in women. In men, and in women after menopause, most is made from testosterone in fat and other tissues. It acts on the brain, bones, blood vessels and reproductive organs.
Why estradiol matters
Estradiol helps protect bone density, heart health, mood and skin. In women, falling levels drive many menopause symptoms. In men, both too little and too much are linked to low libido and fatigue.
What your estradiol results mean
- Low: in women, common in menopause, with very low body fat or heavy training. In men, linked to bone loss and low libido.
- In range: healthy hormone output for your age, sex and cycle phase.
- High: in women, often reflects cycle timing or hormone therapy; less often, ovarian cysts. In men, often linked to extra body fat or testosterone therapy.
- Context matters: in women who still cycle, estradiol swings widely through the month, so note the day of your cycle when you test.
Standard vs. optimal range
| Men | Women | |
|---|---|---|
| Standard lab range | About 10 to 40 pg/mL (varies by lab) | Varies by cycle phase; usually below 30 pg/mL after menopause |
| Insyght optimal range | Set by the Insyght medical team | Set by the Insyght medical team |
Do I need an estradiol test?
Cycles changing, sleep slipping or mood swinging more than usual? On testosterone therapy and feeling off? Estradiol is often the missing piece.
